turn on back swing as possible.
Hold for at least 15 seconds, then repeat twice more.
Reverse the stretch to work the follow through.

What is more is that many golf training stretch exercises can easily be
carried out in your office, while still seated at your desk or work
station. This means that even if you have the sort of schedule that
leaves you with practically no time to spare, you can still find the
time to put in some serious golf training exercises that will take your
game of golf to another level that you have never known before.

There is plenty more evidence that golf training exercises are not as
rigorous and as difficult as some would want to believe. For example in
my golf training exercise programs I have worked with very young and
very old golfers with the same success. Youngsters will have
difficulties taking in extremely rigorous exercises and so will senior
citizens.

Golf training exercises are not designed to help prepare you for a
record-breaking 100 meter dash down the track. Or for an Olympic gold
medal in weight-lifting or gymnastics. The training schedule for these
accomplishments naturally require lots of will power and discipline to
even start.

Instead golf training exercises are usually very specific and are
designed to impact particular aspects of your golf game.

execute themselves without you. It is you and your body executing the

Who Else wants a Perfect Golf Swing?

A perfect golf swing will undoubtedly require your body to include
certain physical qualities in order to execute the mechanics of the
golf swing appropriately. These physical qualities are certain levels
of flexibility, muscular strength, balance, and power.

If you are lacking, even minimal amounts of the necessary physical
attributes to execute the golf swing correctly, inadequacy and
inconsistency will raise their ugly heads, even before you start
swinging your golf club.

For example, to start with, let's look at your flexibility. The perfect
golf swing demands that you to draw the golf club through a large range
of motion. The backswing requires a full, 90 degree shoulder turn in
order to establish the club in the exact position to start the
downswing. After hitting through the ball, the finish position is
almost a mirror image of the backswing.

In order to perform each individual component of the golf swing
correctly, the muscles of your body must be both strong and flexible.
An inflexible body in which muscles are "weak" creates limitations in
movement, which will undoubtedly result in pertinent restrictions to
your golf swing. These limitations will certainly impede you from
creating a full shoulder turn and a balanced finishing position.

Your entire body needs to be strong and flexible in order to perform a
technically perfect golf swing, but certain muscles are more involved
than others, and if these muscles are weak they will directly affect

achieving maximum distance; but timing of what? And how do I achieve
it?

In a nutshell, when is comes to getting the most efficient distance out
of your golf shot, the timing element is the timing of the release of
the stored energy that has amassed during the process of your golf
swing.

Again, for the purposes of this article, let's fast forward just a bit
to the point where you are at the top of your golf swing. At this
point, if all has gone well, your left arm will straight. The
relationship between the club and your wrists will be 90 degrees
(wrists will be cocked). Your hips will have rotated approximately 45
degrees away from their original address position, while your shoulders
have rotated more toward a 90 degree posture. Essentially, you are in
somewhat of a `coiled' position at the top of your back swing.

At this position, you have accumulated your stored energy. Except
additional energy that will be stored and released rapidly as your
shaft flexes and un-flexes, this is what you have to work with.

Now that you have all this energy stored up, how and when to release it
is on of us golfers greatest conundrum. This power that you now possess
is but a fleeting thing, and one must apply it at the proper moment in
order to achieve the desired results.

Unfortunately, from this position at the top of the back swing is where
the vast amount of golfers goes wrong; and that is the first movement
they make back toward the ball is with the hands and arms. If you do
this, a vast amount of your stored energy has now been released and not
available to be applied to the golf ball. When you do this, you lose
the angle created between your wrists and your club. You lose the angle
that you have created between your shoulder and your hips. In essence,
(among other things) you have begun uncoiling way to early.

Among other things, in its simplest form, this type of action is
generally called swinging or releasing from the top or casting the
club. Aside from grossly leaking energy from your swing this will cause
and outside in swing path, and more often than not produce some
severity of slice.

But, let's stay strictly within the confines of energy and timing. If,
from the top of your swing, you begin the ascent of your golf swing
toward the impact zone from the ground up and maintain the
aforementioned angles we discussed much longer, you'll be well on your
way to applying the energy of your swing at the proper moment (not to
mention your swing path will be much more desirable).

From the top of your swing, the weight beginning to transfer from your
back instep toward your front foot is what initiates the downswing. Not
your hands, not your shoulders, not a spinning motion with your hips.
As your weigh begins to move toward your front side, your hips will
follow by beginning to release (uncoil) from the angle they had
attained at the top of the swing. As the hips begin to uncoil and
continue to follow the weight shift your shoulders and arms will
naturally follow. Note that I said naturally. You shouldn't be
consciously firing your arms and shoulders to catch up. If you do, once
again, you have just spent more of your stored energy.

As the weight shifts, the hips follow with rotation and the shoulders
and arms now begin to follow suit, your wrists should still be in a
`cocked' position in relationship to the club. In other words, this
angle is still maintained.

As your left hip clears, this imparts a tremendous amount of pressure
for your upper body to catch up. And catch up it will in a big way.
With you hips cleared and your belly beginning to point down the target
line, you shoulders will follow through the hitting zone and finally
your arms and hands will be naturally force to release in a dramatic
fashion through the impact zone. As all this happens the shaft of your
club will have a pretty fair amount of flex imparted on it. This is
easily discernable if you look at a slow motion or still photo view of
the club coming into the impact zone.

It is at this point, with the shaft flexed that the right hand begins
to release (and eventually pronate) that is the culmination of
releasing all this stored energy upon the golf ball with the proper
timing.

In a sense, the release of the energy which entails the hips following
the initiated weight shift, followed by the upper body responding to
the hips uncoiling, that then begins to lead the arms and hands down
the target line and through the hitting zone until finally the hands
can no longer remain `cocked' and they release the club naturally as a
result of rapidly catching up to the rest of what the body has done.

In summary it is the arms and hands that complete the release of your
stored energy NOT initiate it from the top of your swing. As you begin
to bring this concept together it may actually feel to you as though
your arms and hand are `trailing' the rest of your swing. And in sense
they are... they are waiting for the precise timing. And the great
thing is, is that the physics of this will all take place quite
naturally once you begin to refine the mechanics of your golf swing
with your teaching professional. And with some practice you'll soon be
able to let the natural forces and physics of a good golf swing apply
the proper timing to the golf ball in a smooth and effortless... longer
distance manner.

times goes unnoticed. It is usually thought golf fitness exercises help
us generate more club-head speed, add more distance to our drives, hit

the hands where they need to be, and hold the clubface in the correct
position can be compromised.

The easiest way to correct this problem on a physical level is to
implement a series of golf fitness exercises for the hands, wrists, and
forearms. These exercises will increase the muscular strength and
endurance in these body parts and the end result will be an improvement
in their short game on a physical level.

Secondly, a common problem area within an inadequate short game centres
upon the finite motor skills of these types of shots, which require a
very high level of motor control. Motor control is centred upon the
interaction of the brain, nerves, and muscles and is essentially your
brain telling your body what to do, how to do it, and in what order.
This is a result of your brain coordinating movements of your muscles
through the nervous system. The execution of your brain "telling your
body what to do" can be either efficient or inefficient.

If your brain, nervous system, and muscles are operating efficiently,
the execution of finite motor control movements such as short game
shots are easy. On the other hand, if your is brain telling your
nerves, and consequently your muscles what to do is inefficient, the
execution of finite motor control movements, again such as short game
shots, will be more difficult.

In my opinion, motor control is the second most important area in which
golf fitness exercises can be of benefit to the short game and can
easily be addressed with simple balance exercises.

Golf fitness exercises, specific to the short game incorporate your
brain, nerves, and muscles. They have many benefits when it comes to
the golf swing. Outside the benefit of creating higher levels of
muscular strength and endurance, these exercises assist in motor
control.

Let me explain, we understand motor control is the interaction of your
brain, nerves, and muscles. The interaction can either be efficient or
inefficient. Efficient motor control is good, especially for finite
muscular activities such as short game shots. Golf fitness balance
exercises "challenge" your nervous and muscular system interaction.
Over time as these two systems are "challenged" through exercise they
become more effective. Essentially they operate together more
efficiently, resulting in higher levels of motor control and the
ability to execute finite motor skills (i.e. short game golf shots).

benefit to short game shots. But the reality is totally different than

The words core training, golf fitness, and improving your golf swing
have become common words in golf. It is well known the number of
professional golfers utilizing a golf fitness program to improve their
golf swing. Addition to this well-known situation a common word has
become connected to the phrase golf fitness.

This phrase has become a buzzword in the world of golf. Unfortunately
many do not understand the phrase and the relevance it can have on the
golf swing. The phrase is core training. Core training can be a great
benefit to your golf swing as a part of comprehensive golf fitness
program.

Unfortunately many amateur golfers are unsure of the exact definition
of core training and the relevance it may or may not have on a golf
fitness program. The core is a reference to an anatomical area of body.
The core is the anatomical area of your body from above the knees to
below the chest. It includes all the muscles, nerves, and bones within
in this anatomical region of the body.

It must also be noted that the core includes all the neuromuscular
structures on the front, side, and back of your body. For example, your
lower back muscles are a part of the core as are your abdominals.

Core training is an integral part of a comprehensive golf fitness
program because this is the anatomical area of the body where the
majority of the golf swing occurs. For example, the golf swing requires
you to rotate around a fixed spine angle. The majority of muscles
allowing rotation to occur around a fixed spine angle are found within
the core region.

The golf swing requires a full shoulder turn to execute correctly. The
muscles allowing the shoulders to rotate are mostly found within the
core region of the body. These are just a few examples providing a

focuses upon the principle of cross-specificity training.
Cross-specificity training implies the exercises within the core
program train the body to the positions, movements, and requirements of

and actions encountered on the golf course.

The goal of cross-specific core program is to develop a transfer of
training effect. The majority of fitness programs and many core
programs do not address the needs of the golfer relative to improving
flexibility, balance, strength, endurance, and power. A cross-specific
core program will provide the foundation for a better golf swing. Just
because a program is labelled a "core program" does not necessarily
mean it will be beneficial to improving the golf swing.

Once the golfer understands the concepts of cross-specific training,
transfer of training effect, core, and the biomechanics of the golf
swing. You can begin to piece together the components of a golf fitness
program. Outside of providing the foundation for the golf swing through
providing the golfer with the needed levels of flexibility, balance,
strength, endurance, and power to efficiently execute the golf swing. A
golf fitness program can also improve a golfer's swing.

One common area of desired improvement for most any golfer is increased
distance. Increased distance in the golf swing is equated to increased
club-head speed. And increased club-head speed is directly related to
the golfer's power outputs. Increasing power within the golf swing is
connected to both swing mechanics and the body.

The coiling and uncoiling within the golf swing directly affects the
power outputs generated. In addition the body has a direct affect upon
power development in the golf swing. Power in relation to the body can
be defined as the ability of the body to create the greatest amount of
force in a short amount of time.

If the golfer increases the ability of the body to generate more force,
what will be the result within the golf swing? The golfer is more
powerful, an increase in club-head speed will occur, and the golf ball
will probably travel farther. Interestingly enough improving power
outputs by the body in relation to the golf swing, focuses upon
developing greater power outputs by the core region.

Again, the golf swing is a rotational movement converging in the core
region of the body. Increasing the force outputs of the muscles in the
core can invariably improve the power in your golf swing. This again is
only one example of where core training and golf fitness can improve
the golf swing. Many additional areas of improvement can occur when the
golfer develops the body correctly for the golf swing.

Understand the biomechanics of the golf swing require certain levels of
flexibility, balance, strength, endurance, and power to execute
correctly. The golfer requires minimal levels of these physical
components at the very least to execute the golf swing correctly. The
core is an anatomical region of the body where much of the movements
within the golf swing occur.

A core training program can be beneficial to improving the golf swing
if the exercises within the program are cross-specific to the
movements, positions, and physical requirements of the golf swing. If
the core program is not cross specific to the golf swing, the benefits
may less than optimal. Realize a comprehensive golf fitness program
includes core training to develop the body around the golf swing.

Such a program can improve the golf swing in areas like club-head
speed. And remember just because a program is labelled "core" does not
necessarily mean it will improve your golf swing. The exercises within
the core program must correlate with the movements of the golf swing.
